Sam Barratt is the Campaigns and Communications Director for Avaaz. Prior to this he was Media Director for the 1GOAL World Cup campaign in South Africa and the Head of Media for Oxfam. He has worked across Africa, enjoys a good crisis and is based in Oxford though is about to go and live out in Tanzania for a few months.

Hey Sam, Any chance we can get an urgent Avaaz campaign for the 20 medics on trial in Bahrain? Their appeal is on 28th November. They’ve had an awful time. Terrible accounts of torture. And their suffering is the tip of a huge iceberg. Sorry for mentioning this here. Tried contacting you through Avaaz contact form a while back but I’m sure you get flooded with requests. You don’t have to publish this comment – you’ll only get flooded with Bahraini government trolls telling you how wonderful the Bahraini government is and how evil these doctors were for occupying a hospital and for refusing treatment to Sunni doctors. The only thing these medics ever did was speak to the media about the atrocities going on there (and some of them protested about it too). For that they got arrested in the middle of the night by masked gunmen, beaten, tortured, were imprisoned for lengthy periods (up to 6 months) and then were sentenced for up to 15 years in prison.
